Waking up with you, and sleeping with hundreds of strangers…

Hello! I hope you enjoyed our recent series of guest posts from serial game show contestant and question writer George Long. I know I did! Thanks to George again for sharing all those behind-the-scenes memories (and photos!)

Just a quick (slightly off topic) two-part post today, before we get back to business as usual.

PART I: WAKING UP WITH YOU!

For six weeks now, I’ve been doing the Wednesday breakfast show on community radio station Southern FM, which – if you’re here in Melbourne – you can pick up on 88.3 on the FM dial. If you’re anywhere else, you can listen to the show live on the website at southernfm.com.au. It’s LIVE from 7 to 9 AM each Wednesday (Melbourne time), and I’m having a fantastic time doing it. As part of the show, I’ve created a number of different segments… and one of them is called Heads Up, Listen Up! In Heads Up, Listen Up!, I use the platform to introduce the listeners to an Australian artist or band who they may not have heard of before… But who I reckon they should have heard of, because I think they’re great! So far, I’ve have featured Alice Ruby and Melbourne-based band Mansplainers and I’m keen to find more emerging or non-mainstream, Australian artists and bands, who’d like a little bit of airplay on the radio show. It is only a community radio station and I’m not sure how big the broadcast footprint is… but I figure it’s still a bit of fun to hear your song played on the radio! (Along with a plug for any upcoming gigs you may have). So if you are (or someone you know is) an emerging, non-mainstream Australian artist or band… please email me!

I’d love to find out who you are and what you’re doing… and hopefully bring your work to a slightly wider audience. And if you’re not an emerging non-mainstream Australian artist or band, please consider tuning in tomorrow morning from 7 to 9 anyway to (the enigmatically titled) Wednesday Breakfast with Stephen Hall… for a few fun songs, a few gags, and an upbeat start to your Wednesday.

PART II: SLEEPING WITH HUNDREDS OF STRANGERS…

And the second element of today’s post is my now-annual mention of Melbourne City Mission’s Sleep at the ‘G event, which will be happening on Thursday May 14th this year. This is a fun (although slightly cold and uncomfortable) charity event that raises funds to help combat youth homelessness. Over the last few years, I’ve taken part  with my friends Chris and Tim, and we’ll be doing it all again this year on Thursday May 14th. The idea is that teams sleep on the concrete floors in the walkways of the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground in support of those experiencing homelessness and / or sleeping rough. Our team this year is called The Disciples of Gary… and if you are in a position to make a donation, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

As I have done in our previous efforts, I’ll post a couple of pictures here afterwards, so you can see what a great event it is, and perhaps experience a little bit of schadenfreude at my coldness and tiredness.

That’s about it for this week, but just to recap…

Thanks very much, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow morning (between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM) on 88.3 Southern FM!
