Hello!

Today I’d like to share a fun little look at a real slice of Australian game show history. 45 years ago, in 1980, the Nine Network aired the first ever episode of Sale of the Century. A beloved fixture in the 7:00 PM weeknight time slot, Sale went on to run for a mighty 22 years and 4,610 episodes… (including two episodes, in 1994 and 1999, that I competed on!) I’ve spoken here on the blog many times before about Sale, and its crowd-pleasing mix of being quizzed on your general knowledge, and being dazzled by the allure of high end consumer goods, from pewter tankards and soft toys to jet-skis, speedboats and Mercedes Benz cars!

In its later seasons, Sale was a slick ratings juggernaut, but some of its earliest episodes were arguably a little less polished…

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the show’s first episode, Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive has put together this tribute by Rose Mulready.

Enjoy! And I’ll see you back here next time…
